Slow-down of deforestation following a Brazilian forest policy was less effective on private lands than in all conservation areas

چکیده
Abstract Private lands are important for conservation worldwide, but knowledge about their effectiveness is still insufficient. To help fill this gap, we analyzed the impacts of a national policy on private in Brazil, global biodiversity hotspot with high potential nature-based climate solutions. Through evaluation over 4 million rural properties from Rural Environmental Cadastre, found that last review 2012 mainly affected Amazon Forest. The amnesty granted to 80% landowners small prevented restoration 14.6 hectares agricultural land carbon sequestration 2.4 gigatonnes. We exist within limits public areas and between 2003 2020 deforestation rates these were higher than those across all areas. Cadastre can be an effective tool managing forests lands, integrate governance approaches control mitigate change.

The role of scientists in conservation planning on private lands.
The nexus of advocacy and science has been a recurring discussion theme since the earliest days of the Society for Conservation Biology. When Michael Soulé defined conservation as a “mission-oriented discipline,” he succinctly captured the issue. He and others have asked whether biologists on a mission to save ecosystems, ecological communities, species, and populations can provide the value-fr...
متن کاملProtected Areas’ Impacts on Brazilian Amazon Deforestation: Examining Conservation – Development Interactions to Inform Planning
Protected areas are the leading forest conservation policy for species and ecoservices goals and they may feature in climate policy if countries with tropical forest rely on familiar tools. For Brazil's Legal Amazon, we estimate the average impact of protection upon deforestation and show how protected areas' forest impacts vary significantly with development pressure. We use matching, i.e., co...
متن کاملEvaluating Interactions of Forest Conservation Policies on Avoided Deforestation
We estimate the effects on deforestation that have resulted from policy interactions between parks and payments and between park buffers and payments in Costa Rica between 2000 and 2005. We show that the characteristics of the areas where protected and unprotected lands are located differ significantly. Additionally, we find that land characteristics of each of the policies and of the places wh...

Questions persist regarding whether the science of conservation biology can successfully affect environmental decision making. One of the most prominent fields of intersection between conservation science and environmental policy is public-lands debates in the United States. I reviewed the role of conservation science in the roadless-area policies of the U.S. Forest Service. Since 1971, the For...
متن کاملBenefits and costs of deforestation by smallholders: Implications for forest conservation and climate policy
a r t i c l e i n f o Deforestation is a leading cause of biodiversity loss and an important source of global carbon emissions. This means that there are important synergies between climate policy and conservation policy. The highest rates of deforestation occur in tropical countries, where much of the land at the forest frontier is managed informally by smallholders and where governance system...
